چکیده

We use numerical experiments to analyze the kinetics of grain boundary wetting in polycrystalline aggregates under the influence of an external applied shear stress. Grain boundary wetting is driven by the stress concentration at the tip of the fluid front. The extent of wetting of favorably oriented grain boundaries depends on the fluid mobility number b, which is defined as the ratio of the rate of stress relaxation by grain boundary wetting to the rate of stress relaxation by grain boundary diffusion. The applied stress can be relaxed by grain boundary diffusion, by grain boundary wetting or by a combination of both. In the wetting regime, an anisotropic grain boundary fluid network will develop due to the external shear stress. 2004 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Role of dynamic grain boundary wetting in fluid circulation beneath volcanic arcs

[1] We report the influence of shear deformation on the microstructure of water-saturated olivine and clinopyroxene aggregates. Prior to deformation, the aqueous fluid was isolated in pockets along grain corners in the olivine-water aggregates, while it was interconnected by a network of grain-edge tubules in the clinopyroxene-water aggregate. During deformation of both types of aggregates, the...

Fractal analysis of quartz grain boundary in the gneissic granite of Abadchi, North of Shahrekord

The granitic gneisses of Abadchi village is located in the North of Zayandeh-Rud dam, where the area is a part of Sanandaj-Sirjan Zone. The mineralogical composition of the rocks is composed of quartz, plagioclase, K-feldspar, biotite, amphibole, muscovite, zircon, titanite and allanite. Quartz crystals, as the most abundant mineral constituents of these rocks, display the different conditions ...

Correlation of Grain Boundary Character with Wetting Behavior

Wetting of ~975 grain boundaries (GB’s) by liquid Cu in an iron-based alloy has been studied as a function of the five macroscopic degrees of freedom (DoF’s) of grain boundary character. In addition, models of GB energy in terms of all five DoF’s, and o f anisotropic solid-liquid interfacial energy have been developed. The experimentally observed wetting behavior is interpreted in terms of the ...

Development of Superplastic Structural Ceramics

Superplastic structural ceramics (Y-TZP, A1203, Si3N4, and their composites) that can withstand biaxial stretching to large strains have been developed recently. Microstructural design of these ceramics first requires an ultrafine grain size that is stable against coarsening during sintering and deformation. A low sintering temperature is a necessary, but not a sufficient, condition for achievi...

Finite Element Modeling of Strain Rate and Grain Size Dependency in Nanocrystalline Materials

Nanocrystalline materials show a higher strain-rate sensitivity in contrast to the conventional coarse-grained materials and a different grain size dependency. To explain these phenomenon, a finite element model is constructed that considers both grain interior and grain boundary deformation of nanocrystalline materials. The model consist of several crystalline cores with different orientations...
